Courtyard House

A house designed and built in the farmlands had to respond both to a rural aesthetic of design as well as a harsh summer climate. This along with the compulsion of integrating an old structure with the new house led to the introduction of a central courtyard as a source of light and air for the house. The use of cavity wall construction and aerated cement blocks in the roof added much needed thermal mass and insulation to reduce heat gain. The exposed brick exterior with corbeled brick details at the coping was reminiscent of the houses and administrative buildings in the adjacent town of Sitapur. The use of sandstone jalis & window shades on the narrow exterior windows as well as sandstone & jaisalmer paving in the courtyard further added to both the core concerns of the design.
