Floating Roof House

This project was conceived at a house from the 1960s built by a horticulturist inspired by the prairie house style of Frank Lloyd Wright but needed to accommodate the changed requirements and aspirations of the subsequent generations of inhabitants while respecting the original. The addition of a G+2 service block, a living area on the terrace, an art studio, a duplex music studio, redevelopment of an office and coffee bar besides that of the open spaces around and within the house by way of a courtyard and lawn areas has meant that the the site now has a completely refreshed design language. The overall expression of the house remains that of plastered white wall surfaces but brings from FLW (to complement the original cobbled stone facade) an articulation of exposed materials like brick, metal, stone and wrought iron with aesthetics being derived from the detailing and construction. The interior too employs a similar method using common materials in a carefully crafted harmony. The use of pattern, texture and colour become central to highlighting different materials.
